The double life!!! Yup, that was the shocker!
I am an outsider, and I had thought JW kids would all be "perfect". Boy, was I naive. It just blew me away when I learned how many JW kids were allowed to drink and party till all hours as long as they were with other JW kids. This, while the mother of one of them was telling me how "wholesome" JW kids are. I do think that many of them have a bit of a fixation on sex. They are told so much about not doing it from such a young age, yet not allowed to deal with their emerging sexuality. They seem to think it is something they can't control (like animals) which is why they HAVE TO HAVE chaperones.
I was so, so naive about Jehovah's Witnesses! -

"I read only non-fiction..."
by patio34 inhi all you wonderful folks!.
i know a couple of people who made the above statement recently and got to thinking about it.
the way i see it a comparison could be made between fiction and non-fiction & art and photography.. both have their places, but art changes the original to match what the artist sees.

I am a dedicated book worm, mostly fiction. I, too, find many of Oprah's books gloomy. So many are about such miserable, unhappy lives. But I like most books, even romance trash sometimes.
Has anyone read Kathy Reich's books. The hero is a forensic anthropologist, so a bit of crime and a bit of forensics. Really interesting. -

My father-in-law is a sweet rather sentimental man and my mother-in-law tries to pretend she isn't sentimental at all. For my husband's last birthday, they bought him the book "Love You Forever" by Robert Munch (we had it already, but so what) and made a tape of Vera Lynn singing "My Son, My Son". We ALL got teary. I am blessed to have such wonderful in-laws, and a great husband and kids. I love mush.

Thank you, Running man, for the information. So, if there are only about 8700 people allowed to have communion (my Anglican background is showing) is there Kingdom Halls all over where they just pass the emblems around and NO ONE is allowed to have any? I mean, this bread and wine is pretty sacred stuff isn't it? What do they do with it then if nobody is allowed to have any at that particular Kingdom Hall? What are they going to do when the annointed all die, because aren't they all elderly? I'm so confused!!!!

For all the outsiders peeking into this thread....what exactly is the procedure at the memorial supper. Thanks to Scully, I know it is matzoh and kosher wine, but do they use a fancy chalice and plate like at some other churches. Is it passed around the whole congregation? I know only a chosen few can have any. How do they know who they are? When is the Memorial anyway? Do they have it at all the Kingdom Halls at the same time?
Sorry for the ignorance? -

What Its All About - Lurkers
by Amazing inits all about lurkers: there are at least three main types of lurkers, 1. a jw with doubts, concerns, feeling that something is wrong with the religion, 2. an ex-jw who is caught between two worlds, and does not feel free yet to live a normal life, 3. a non-jw who is either involved with a jw, or a relative of a jw, or is in the middle of being studied with by the jws.. defining moments: everything we write, say, and do is observed by the lurkers.
in a single moment, or a series of collected comments, we will eventually cause a lurker to have a defining moment ... a point in time where they decide that being a jw is not for them anymore, or that they can stop living between two worlds, or cease studying, and not join the religion.
we may never know who we help, or how many.. flame wars and character attacks: when we get embroiled in these, whether we are the instigator or the brunt of the attacks ... what are we really doing?

Amazing, what an amazing post!
The thought you brought forth in your section on the harm of personal attacks is something I have been concerned about. Because the JW young man that I know is only 15, I have been very concerned how he would deal with the "flame wars" should he see them. I don't think he has the maturity yet to understand what is happening. The other thing is I don't think he, or many others have the time or inclination to follow the situation to where there is often some very civilized resolution such as apologies, or agreeing to disagree. They only see the "anger" part.
In any case I am very grateful to everyone who posts on the board for the insight into a completely different, somewhat scary world. -

Thank you, Dakota Red , for providing the text, and freeman for you clear rebuttal. I know shunning is wrong, but it is helpful to clearly have it in writing why it is wrong.

j,
He's just a kid, so cut him some slack. When he is ready he will step out in his own way. Just being willing to discuss his feelings with you about leaving takes lots of courage.
Hope eveything is going well for you. -
